This is "Root Cottage", one of 2 log cabins atSMERTS RESORT. You can see the corner of our "Lakeview Cottage" on the left of the picture. These two cottages are right on the water with Bass Lake about 15' in front of the cottages. We have 7 cottages available for rent. All of our cottages have showers with one (Cora Cottage) having a shower & tub. They all have complete kitchens equipped with dishes, pots and pans, silverware, toasters, refrigerators and ranges. Pillows and bedspreads are furnished. You should bring your own sheets and pillow cases, towels and soap. Cottage rental is by the week from Saturday to Saturday unless otherwise arranged. Daily rental is only if cottage is available on a last minute reservation.

HISTORY - The land was patented to Charles Mears (a famous lumbering tycoon) in 1854. The Trappers Cottage (part of Slabsides Cottage) was probably already there. Charles Mears most likely built Root Cottage for his own use somewhere between 1854 and 1890. Prior to 1890, the hotel was built and established as one of THEE places to go for the elite of Chicago. Some of the finest meals were served in the hotel dining room. The Chicago Socialites would take a train to Muskegon and then a stagecoach to the resort. Around 1890, it became known as McKee's Resort. McKee was believed to be a relative to Charles Mears. Lazi-dais Cottage was a trading post and Gardenside cottage was a stagecoach depot with the stagecoach drivers staying upstairs between runs. A dance pavillion extended out over Bass Lake in the area of our main pier with a boat house underneath. In 1920 the resort was purchased by Thomas Schlick and it became known as Schlick's Resort. At that time he built Lakeview Cottage, Cora Cottage, Hideaway Cottage and renovated the other buildings into cottages. In 1973, the present owners purchased the resort and the name was changed again to it's present name. Extensive renovating has been done since then. One of the things the present owners were careful about was to keep the historical characteristics intact while changing certain things for the comfort of their guests. BASS LAKE - Excellent swimming & fishing! Some of the fish that can be caught in the Bass Lake are Tiger Muskie, Northern Pike, Bass, Blue Gills, Crappie, Bullheads. You will find that the fish have a sweeter flavor out of Bass Lake due to all the flowing wells. Bass lake is about 525 acres fed by many artesian (flowing) wells along the entire East side. Bass Lake is not a very deep lake, only about 25' in it's deepest part. Bass lake has an outlet into lake Michigan with a dam. Many of our guests use this fine beach also, for a swim in lake Michigan during their stay.

SWIMMING - Bass Lake is a sandy bottom lake and we have a fine beach at SMERTS RESORT for your sunbathing! Bass Lake gradually goes deep in front of SMERTS RESORT making it ideal for children. At the end of our piers, it is only about 30" to 40" deep. We always suggest that children be supervised at all times by an adult. Especially Small Children.

BOATING - We have row boats and motors for rent, or feel free to bring your own. Many of our guests bring in their own ski boats, bass boats, and sail boats for extra fun. If you plan to do any boating, you will need 1 life jacket per person in the boat. We have these available for rent if you don't have your own.

SHOPPING - Ludington is only 10 miles away where there are many supermarkets, discount centers, gift shops, bait shops and so forth. Pentwater is only 6 miles away for those who don't need too much. Pentwater has some quaint little shops and restaurants. This area, Western Michigan, is also a fruit belt. Depending on the time of year you are here, you will find fresh asparagus, cherries, apples, peaches, apricots, or you name it in many of the fine fruit stands along the highways.

FISHING - If you like to fish, you won't go home empty-handed. Many a nice Bass, Pike, or Muskie is caught right off of one of our piers! As far as panfish, you can catch as many as your family feels like cleaning (the limit of course)! Most fishermen get their limit on all species! If you wish to freeze some of your catch, we have a big freezer in the office. Just mark your packages and we will be happy to freeze them for you. With lake Michigan nearby, some fishermen try their luck in one of the many fishing derbys for big prizes! There are charter boats available for big lake fishing or again, some people bring their own boat. We have enough space for parking, if you so wish.
